Apply for grants, scholarships by April 28

Each year, the Woman’s Press Club of Indiana awards cash scholarships and prizes to student, professional and public service journalists as part of its mission to support Indiana communicators.

Awards include a $1,000 scholarship to an Indiana journalism student who is currently a college junior; a $500 scholarship to a mature journalist; a $500 scholarship for a travel writer; and a $500 award for public service.

The deadline for applications for all awards is April 28, 2024.

Elizabeth and Fred Granger Travel Journalism Scholarship Grant, $500

This award was established by WPCI member Elizabeth Granger in memory of her husband, Fred Granger, who died in 2020. Fred also was a member of WPCI who served on the Education and Scholarship committees. The award is open to Indiana journalists working in travel journalism. The scholarship/grant may be used for further education through courses or seminars, travel or lodging to such seminars, personal equipment, or other expenses tied to enhancing the applicant’s travel journalism experience. Louise Eleanor Ross Kleinhenz Memorial $500 Scholarship

One $500 award will be made to a woman or man over age 30 who desires to upgrade her/his skills to re-enter the journalism job market or to upgrade journalism skills. This award is given in memory of Louise Eleanor Ross Kleinhenz, a WPCI 45-year member and former president. (Apply online or download a PDF. After April 8: Email directly to Elizabeth Granger.)

Hortense P. Myers Memorial Journalism $1,000 Scholarship

A former UPI statehouse reporter, in 1942 Hortense P. Myers was the first woman to work for the International Press Service. A 1953 graduate of Butler University, Myers was inducted into the Indiana Journalism Hall of Fame in 1977. The $1,000 scholarship in her honor will be awarded to a junior-level Indiana college student, female or male, who is planning a career in journalism. (Apply online or download a PDF. Julie and Gene Slaymaker $500 Award for Public Service in Journalism

The Julie and Gene Slaymaker Award for Public Service in Journalism will award $500 to a professional journalist or college student who has provided public service to journalism in the past year, above and beyond that person’s job description. The applicant must provide documentation from the recipient of the public service.
