Update: Deadline extended to May 12, 2020
The Woman’s Press Club of Indiana will award cash scholarships and prizes to student, professional and public service journalists this spring as part of its mission to support Indiana communicators.
These include a $1,000 scholarship to an Indiana journalism student who is currently a college junior; a $500 scholarship to a mature journalist; and a $500 award for public service.
The deadline for applications for all awards is May 12, 2020.
Here are the three awards:
Hortense P. Myers Memorial Journalism $1,000 Scholarship
A former UPI statehouse reporter, in 1942 Hortense P. Myers was the first woman to work for the International Press Service. A 1953 graduate of Butler University, Myers was inducted into the Indiana Journalism Hall of Fame in 1977. The $1,000 scholarship in her honor will be awarded to a junior-level Indiana college student, female or male, who is planning a career in journalism. (Download the PDF application and instructions.)
Louise Eleanor Ross Kleinhenz Memorial $500 Scholarship
One $500 award will be made to a woman or man over age 30 who desires to upgrade her/his skills to re-enter the journalism job market or to upgrade journalism skills. This award is given in memory of Louise Eleanor Ross Kleinhenz, a WPCI 45-year member and former president. (Download the PDF application and instructions.)
Julie and Gene Slaymaker $500 Award for Public Service in Journalism
The Julie and Gene Slaymaker Award for Public Service in Journalism will award $500 to a professional journalist or college student who has provided public service to journalism in the past year, above and beyond that person’s job description.
