High school winners exemplify excellence

Indiana high school journalism students made names for themselves in this year’s WPCI High School Journalism Contest.

Contest Director Elizabeth Granger reported that three of the winners from Indiana also won first-place awards in the national competition. Both the WPCI contest and the national competition are part of the National Federation of Press Women’s contest program.

The three national winners are:

Hudson Mulhall, Homestead High School, Fort Wayne, first in yearbook copywriting, “Restart Culture: Getting in the Water is the Hardest Part!”
Lilly Ferazzi, Noblesville High School, Noblesville, news/feature photo
Josh Coulon, Hamilton Southeastern High School, Fishers, sports photo

Granger also stages a “Best of the Best” competition, which this year was nabbed by Noblesville High School in Noblesville.

“Behind the Lens,” a video feature by Addie McMillan and Lucas Zimmer, took first place. It chronicled the photography development of senior Tyler Cowan. In saying the video is “so well done,” the contest judge wrote: “This tells a full story, offering great perspectives on the subject’s work and process. Very well done!”

The video was broadcast on the school’s May 27, 2024, segment of “Around the County.” The adviser is Joe Akers.

Taking second place was a sports photo by Joshua Coulon of Hamilton Southeastern High School in Fishers. It catches a pile of football players all reaching for the ball, their hands and arms stacked above the ball. It was published in the school’s Southeastern Sports Network in August 2024. The adviser is David Young.

Third place went to a soccer yearbook layout titled “We’ve got goals” by Jaren Peters of Zionsville Community High School in Zionsville. The adviser is Lauren Wagner.
