From the judge: A call for common decency and common sense is handled deftly amid an almost out-of-control drive for school spirit, distorted into borderline idiocy. The situation is well-defined as a case is skillfully made for mutual respect, decency and what is right. The writer reflects a caring concern for the school's reputation and provides a path toward solution.

From the judge: Well-reported story on a topic that affects everyone. Nice localization and sourcing. Excellent job at keeping the writing lean and mean when many other writers (even pros) are unable to distill such a thorny topic to something readers easily can consume.

From the judge: A gripping portrait of a teen's clinical depression brought on by the untimely death of her father. Vivid lead, good use of quotes, solid reporting and compelling writing. Jackie Welsh's honesty and candor make her an excellent spokesperson for mental health. This article should be submitted to teen and mental health magazines for possible publication.

From the judge: This is a strong news piece about a subject of interest in just about any school. Great job telling this story, and especially on putting a human face on the staff members who have to deal with the problems. Highlights include good writing, organization and a superb job by Sean Jordan, who really understands how to reach audiences through the camera. Sean should stay with this, if he's at all interested in TV news or visual storytelling.
